Tech Advice?

Okay, I've got 97GBs of AVI files currently stored on my computer. I am, inevitably, running out of room. Now, I can burn then onto DVD-Rs easily enough, but then they are only viewable on my or other PCs. What I want to do is be able to convert them into DVD-ready formats so they can play on any standard DVD player and I can watch them on my big screen TV.

Unfortunately, I'm having difficulty finding a suitable program to do the converting. Help please?

So far, I've looked at:
  • SmartDVD Creator (might be okay, but looks complicated as hell so I don't know if I even could use it)
  • DVDSanta (looks great at first glance, thought I had a winner, but further research reveals history of complaints with Better Business Bureau for being thieving liars)
  • Cucusoft Converter (looks good on surface, but a lot of negative reviews)
  • Allok Converter (cheaper, but limited use)
  • Easy Converter (free trial version is only 5min, paid version has no Help Menu)
  • WinAVI Video Converter (simple to use, but may or may not sacrifice quality for speed)
Lost and confused, I turn to my Flist for tech advice.  If you use or know of a good (preferably FREE!) AVI to DVD converting program, or even if you happen to know of an LJ comm where I can ask, please make me a recommendation. I don't know what to do, I need your help!

My only qualification is that the program be simple to use, effective, and preferably high quality. Speed isn't an issue for me, and while I'd prefer something free I am willing to pay if I must. I know there are literally hundreds of such programs out there, surely there's one for me amongst the lot?
